MATHS WEEK

Last week, the Maths Department ran our inaugural ‘Maths Week’. A week to celebrate all things Maths. And what a week it was!

EACH DAY

Every morning, the day started with a Maths Joke and Maths Trivia in Homegroups.

Jokes included…

“After a talking sheepdog gets all the sheep in the pen, he reports back to the farmer: “All 40 accounted for.”

“But I only have 36 sheep,” says the farmer.

“I know,” says the sheepdog. “But I rounded them up.”

The Maths Trivia included…

If you purchased a medium sized cappuccino every day for a week from the Cafe, how much money would you spend in two school weeks?

How many minutes do you attend Homegroup in one week?

Arranging staff in order of their ages

How many words can you form using only the letters from MATHEMATICS?

What is the only thing that gets larger the more you take out of it?

The winning Homegroup was KENNEDY 7 - they will be celebrating their win with a hot chip lunch in the coming days.

TUESDAY

Tuesday was Pi-Day

Miss Hazelwood and her Year 11 Hospitality class choose 8 pie flavours to cost out, prepare and cook. These very creative students choose the flavours of:

Steak and Gravy

Butter Chicken

Beef, Bacon and Cheese

Chilli Beef

Lemon Meringue

Caramel Pie

Rocky Road

Apple Pie

Over 200 pies were created and sold to students and staff, raising over $300 for charity.

Within this pie making exercise, the student group who sold out their pies first were the Year 11 Hospitality winners.

This was won by Ashlyn Carracher, Courtney Edge, Annabelle Heggaton, Ashtyn O’Hare, Brittany Wiggins and Abbey Williams.

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday was Pi-Cake Decorating Day.

Interested students were able to show off their cake decorating skills by bringing in a cake or cup-cakes decorated in the theme of ‘Maths and/or Pi.' Some very talented students and staff took up this challenge and their cakes are shown in the pictures. During the day, students and staff were able to bid in a silent auction for these cakes. The very happy winners of the cakes were Rory Arragon and Friends, Mr Simpson, Jennifer Lungley and Friends, Miss Nolan, Angus Purcell and Friends, Mrs Hall and the Year 11 IT class.

For the cake decorators, the winners of the highest bid and ‘best in show’ was won by Courtney Edge, Tait Huggett and Brittany Wiggins.

THURSDAY

Throughout the week, a game was on offer to all students to get involved with. It was called ‘Teacher Number Game’. Every teacher had a number written on a badge to wear for the week. Students were sent out a questionnaire to fill in about the numbers the staff were wearing. Students could play individually or as part of a team. Questions that students were asked in the questionnaire included…

Which staff are perfect squares?

Which staff are irrational?

What is the sum of the English teachers?

Which staff are factors of Mr Hope?

Who is the angle sum of a pentagon?

The winner of The Teacher Number Game was Timothy Goldthorpe.

Overall, the Maths staff had a fabulous time putting on Maths Week. In total, we have raised around $400 for Charity.

We thank all the staff for their willingness to be a part of the activities.

A massive thank you to Miss Hazelwood and her Year 11 Hospitality class for Pi-Day.

Well done to all students who participated and got involved over the week and congratulations to our winners.

The Maths staff have already been talking about some exciting additions to make Maths Week 2018 even bigger and better - see you next year!
