A Father's Love

BY GLENN BOOTH (VCAL & HOSPITALITY TEACHER)

Last week it was my Dad’s birthday. This reminded me of last year when I was lucky enough to spend a whole long weekend with my Dad including his birthday.

I had bought an old bus for $1500 to turn it into an RV but it was in NSW so we were not allowed to get it for a long period of time. When we got there, the previous owner couldn’t meet us but said the keys are at the storage lot and it should start for ya.

Well, it did not start for us at all. I looked around the bus, gave it a good look over, and checked the battery connections. I said to my Dad: give it another shot. Sparks started flying everywhere. We decided to replace this battery that was worn and it started straight away.

I drove the bus for two hours and was feeling great about my purchase. Then it happened, the inevitable. Something went wrong. It made a massive noise and completely snapped a long bar under the bus which made the bus lose all power on a major freeway. As it was a long weekend there were no mechanics working in the area, so I paid a tow truck driver to come and pick the bus up and tow it all the way back to where we had collected it from. Then a few weeks later he towed it all the way to my property near Sale.

At the time my thought was: wow, I drove 12 hours to drive this bus two hours and then abandon it and wait for someone else to deal with it, what a waste of time. I could have just called someone to tow it from the start….

But in reflection…

My Dad and I made the most of our time together. We got to spend the whole long weekend together including celebrating his birthday, I had the time to get my guitar out and we played and sang some of his favourite songs. This was an amazingly rich experience for both of us.

For most of my life I thought that I was a lot more like my Mum than my Dad, but now realise daily that I am becoming more like my Dad in many ways and I am extremely happy with that. I am so thankful for him, for who he is and what he has done for me and the rest of my family.

This trip brought me to think about how much I want to be more like my Heavenly Father and how I should continue to try to be more and more like Him, my other loving Father.

This trip transformed my life. So I now want you to take time to think about how you can live with more of the characteristics of a loving Father, a life of grace and forgiveness modelled to us by a good God.

You too can start to transform your life.

We love because God first loved us
