MATHS THIS TERM

In Mathematics, the Year Three/Four students have been focusing on Number and Algebra knowledge, as well as mixing it up with some Measurement and Statistics.

We began the Term exploring Place Value; looking at understanding 3 and 4-digit numbers, how to break them into their parts (thousands, hundreds, tens and ones) and ordering them from smallest to largest. Over the past few weeks, we have been exploring addition and subtraction strategies to solve addition and subtraction equations. The strategies we looked at included; counting on, number lines, partitioning and the column method. We have focused on the column method as this is used to solve equations involving large numbers. This week, the students are exploring the relationship between addition and subtraction, and how we can use inverse equations to check our answers. For the rest of this Term in Number and Algebra, we will be focused on multiplication and division strategies, and the relationship between these two operations.

Measuring the length of our body parts

This Term, the Grade Three/Four teachers have been trialing a new structure for Mathematics. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday have a focus on Number and Algebra, while Thursday and Friday focus on the other two areas of Mathematics; Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. This Term so far; we have discussed various tools and units for measuring objects, learnt how to measure objects using a ruler and measuring tape and compared the length of objects using language such as ‘bigger’, ‘smaller’, ‘larger’.

Working on our number sense

Exploring chance and probability

The past few weeks, we have explored Chance; what chance events are and the language used to describe chance events (likely, unlikely, certain, impossible). Students have been conducting chance experiments (ask them to show you their coin flip!); they have been making predictions about the outcome of their experiment and learning how to use a tally table to record their results.

Multiplication ninja masters

Our students have now been tested on their multiplication knowledge and have brought home their first times tables sets to work on at home. The aim is for your student to be able to recall the correct answer to each times table question in a given set, in any order.

Miss Tilley, Mrs Rowe and Miss Wright are so proud of the work being completed in mathematics. The students have engaged with the curriculum, and in particular the hands-on activities that we have offered.

OUR NEW CLASSROOM FURNITURE

A big thank you to Paula, Mr Kitch and our amazing students for helping unload and set up our new classroom furniture. We had quite a busy day last Thursday removing our old tables and chairs, and bringing in our new tables, chairs and bag lockers. We think it all looks fantastic and the students love having their books and pencil cases in their tubs under their own table.

REMINDERS and IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • Messages - If you need to have a message passed on to your child during the day, can you please send this via the office as we cannot guarantee that emails will be read during the day.
  • Year 3/4 Common Room. The students in Year 3/4 all keep their bags in classroom 7. We would love to be able to set this up as a common room with some coffee tables and couches. If you happen to have a spare couch, floor rug or coffee table that is in good condition that you are rehoming, we would love for you to consider donating it to the school for students to use. Please contact Mel Rowe if you have something suitable.
  • Diaries - Your child should be bringing home their school diary each night. We would like to encourage your child (or parent) to write down the title and author of the book that is read, along with the page numbers that have been read. Students should be bringing in their diary to school daily. We would also appreciate if a parent/guardian signs the diary at least once a week.
  • Face masks -  It would be great to have a spare mask or two packed in your child's bag inside a re-sealable bag.
  • Tissues - Thank you to those families that have sent along a box of tissues to be used in your child's classroom. We would love for you to consider sending one in if you are yet to do so.
  • Times tables - Please assist your your child to practice these times tables so that they can respond automatically and in any order. When your child feels confident to be tested, they should let their teacher know. They will then be tested over the next few days. If they successfully pass the set of times tables, they will receive their next ninja belt (set of tables) to learn.
