What a busy few weeks we have had in PE!

Curriculum Update

Foundation:  The focus for the past two weeks for our Foundation Students has been on the Perceptual Motor Program (PMP). This program aims to enhance the students Fundamental Movement Skills while completing a variety of activities. Some of the activities that were selected were the balance beam, hop scotch, bowling, and leap pad. These stations focused on balancing, jumping, hopping and rolling. It was great to see the progress that each students demonstrated as the lesson went on.

Year One/Two: Over the past two weeks, the Level 1 and 2 students began their four week Basketball Program which is being delivered by Knox Basketball.

The students have been practising some of the key skills involved in the game e.g. dribbling, catching, moving, passing and shooting. All of these skills have been modified to allow each student to be successful and develop confidence. An example of one modification is the shortened basketball rings being used for the lay-ups exercise.

Over the next two weeks the students will look to combine these skills into mini team games.

Year Three/Four: Over the last two weeks, our Level 3 and 4 students have participated in lessons which focused on collaborative team play.

Students worked together to strategise, which enabled them to gain a competitive edge over their opposition. It was pleasing to see the students work so well together and the team spirit that was on display. Students demonstrate great resilience when things were not going their way and bounced back terrifically/

The games we focused on were Line it Up, Hand Tennis and Skittles. These games also incorporated both their Fine and Gross Motor Skill development.

Moving forward into the next fortnight, we will focus on a unit of basketball.

Year Five/Six: Level 5 and 6 students have participated in a two week basketball unit.

The first session concentrated on practising the skills that are involved in the game such as passing, dribbling, stealing, shooting and movement. These skills were practised in mini team games which promoted success over winning.

During the second lesson we moved on to playing a half-court game of basketball. The students cooperated very well in their teams and it was great see both the skills and sportsmanship on display.

Moving forward to the next fortnight, we will focus a unit on striking.

Division Swimming:

Eighteen students represented Upwey South at the Division Swimming Carnival at Croydon Memorial Pool on March 2.

As I say every year, the students should be commended on the way they conducted themselves over the course of the day. Their level of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience was at a very high level.

I am super proud of each student who participated on the day and congratulate them all on their efforts in their events. We saw some great team spirit and determination in each of the races.

I think I can speak for everyone when I say, to get every student through to the Regional stage is an amazing effort. The Regional Swimming Event is on Friday March 25th at Aquanation. I wish all of these students the best of luck.

House Athletics Day:

On Monday February 28 we held our Level 3-6 House Athletics Carnival at Knox Athletics Track.

It was pleasing to see so many students dressed in their house colours and participate in the selected events. We had some fantastic results across the day and a number of students will now progress through to the District stage later in Term Three.

One highlight for me, was the team spirit that was on display. The amount of students who were cheering on their fellow house mates was great to see.

A big thank you has to go out to our parents and teacher helpers on the day. Without your support we would not be able to run events such as these.

Good luck to the competitors who have progressed to the next stage.
