Mathematics overview

During Term One the main focus within Mathematics is Number and Algebra. We have gone into detail with all four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We spent time revisiting place value and understanding the values from decimals to millions. We expanded numbers to break down their values and to understand how a number is formed.

The Learning Intention during the teaching of the operations, was to allow all students to develop a range of strategies which allowed them to complete these equations. Students all learn in different ways and different processes work for different students. Addition and Subtraction follow very straight forward process, where as Multiplication and Division have a couple of methods that can be used.

Students used the CUBES methods, to understand and complete a range of one and two step worded problems. This method allows the students to identify the main numbers, the maths process needed to complete and the actual question being asked.

John Monash Science School

During this weeks sessions, all groups participated in some fun activities and learnt some new things. Our Mini Mathematicians completed permutations, the Robogals coded their EV3 robots to race around a track and try their best to win the races and our Little Scientist learnt about adaptations. Here are some photos taken during our time on Wednesday at JMSS:

Keep Australia Beautiful

On Monday 7th of March, our Year Five and Six students participated in a Keep Upwey South Beautiful Clean Up. Students watched a BTN episode linked to the special day (Sunday 6th March), completed a group comprehension activity and then walked around our school to collect dropped rubbish. Even with our students not taking rubbish outside we managed to collect three bags of rubbish. Awesome effort kids. I wonder how we can promote Nude Food and even less rubbish in our beautiful environment?
