Discovery Centre

To start the year, the Discovery Centre at Concord School has taken a trip back in time! Students can journey from our distant past over 50,000 years ago right through to the present day. They will travel through settlement/invasion at Botany Bay in 1788 and meet Indigenous warrior Pemulwuy, Governor Arthur Phillip, as well as convicts Henry and Susannah Kable.

Students can explore the Victorian goldfields in 1851, where Chinese miner James Chung-Gon rests by his tent. They can observe an ANZAC Soldier Douglas Grant standing at attention in the trenches of the battlefields of the Western Front in 1914.

There was much movement and migration after both World Wars and students can investigate Italian immigrant Maria Sernia Assunta and member of the Stolen Generation Netta Cahill-McCarthy standing side by side. In the library, artist Nickel Mundabi Ngadwa, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, has taken up residence since 2009.

The M.I.L.E. (Multisensory Interactive Learning Environment) Room provides opportunities for authentic inquiry learning where students participate in different activities linked to the real world. Under the learning area of ‘Social Responsibility’, students will learn all about Australian history and our geographic place in the world.

This discovery and inquiry based learning is important for students as it is a process that involves a number of important activities for students, including asking questions, investigating multiple sources of information for a purpose, thinking critically to make sense of information they’ve found, and then communicating new understanding and knowledge.

A huge thank you to our Discovery Centre Team Ash Butler, Di Villa and Nikki Long for their planning, design and creation.
