Technology and Applied Studies - Year 9

Agriculture - Classes have been learning about poultry production with a hands-on practical assessment which involved each student taking home and raising two day-old chickens for five weeks. As a result of this experience students were required to produce a brochure demonstrating the appropriate care for young chickens, including nutritional and regulated temperature needs.

Food - This term students explored Food in Australia and the multicultural influence on Australian food. The unit culminated in preparing a shared plated to bring to a multicultural banquet. Students have begun research on Foods for Special needs with a presentation to their class scheduled during Weeks 8 and 9.

IST- Year 9 have been learning how to use spreadsheets to simulate events and make predictions. They will begin to create a spreadsheet as a solution to a series of real world problems.

Graphics - Students have been working on freehand drawing with great success. They have also been expanding their knowledge with Rendering, Geometrical Shapes and will be presenting logos for their first assignment.  The logo designs will then be drawn using illustrator and laser cut into key tags.

The use of laser designs will introduce students to Illustrator producing projects such as key holders, coasters, cubes and jigsaw pieces.

Timber - Timber classes have been working on a Chopping Boards, where traditional woodworking styles have been used with a combination of traditional and modern manufacturing  techniques. Students have used a wide range of hand and power tools and were given the opportunity to incorporate a variety of different timbers into their board in order to produce an authentic design.

Metal - Year 9 Campfire BBQ’s are underway and will incorporate a number of new techniques that many of students may not have been exposed to before. Mig and Oxy welding as well as plasma cutting are all included within this project and should provide the students with an enjoyable challenge.
