Finding Help in Times We Feel are Helpless

After feeling like we have been at the centre of the worst COVID conditions in the country for so long, it is a very different feeling to be a spectator to the tragedies of others. As we watch from afar the floods further up the Eastern coast and the situation in Ukraine, it provokes so many feelings; survivor guilt, helplessness, anger, fear and sadness.

In the helplessness when we are looking for ways to act that will help, we pray:

O Lord God of infinite mercy, we humbly implore You to look down on the people of countries that inflict pain on others. Do not count Your people’s sins against them, but grant them true repentance, that the lusts of the human heart may be conquered by Your Spirit of gentleness and righteousness. Look in mercy on those immediately exposed to peril. Comfort the people of Ukraine and relieve the sufferings of the wounded and those who have fled their home. According to Your good and gracious will, remove the causes and occasions of this fighting, and restore peace among the nations; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Lord our Good Shepherd, we pray for the many immediate needs resulting from the floods in Queensland and New South Wales. May volunteer and government efforts be coordinated so there are no gaps in meeting needs. We pray for enough money, equipment, supplies, and food and water. We pray that roadways will be clear and safe. Amen.

Without immediate dangers around us, our students can sometimes feel helpless in their own lives and that their path is determined by external influences as the following quote questions.

“It’s odd the persistent feeling among many young people of either intellectual inferiority or intellectual superiority, depending on their background. Intelligence does not have a dress code, it doesn’t have an accent, and it doesn’t have a race. It’s simply a question of, do you like studying? Are you passionate about what you’re doing? Are you willing to go the extra mile?”

Live Your Life with Passion and Purpose by Vee Kativhu

To help us to focus on what we can do rather than what we can’t, I invite our students and their families to pray:

Gracious Lord, thank you that you are my creator, you know me better than anyone else. Help me to use the mind you have given me to learn and study effectively. May I learn with humility and grace. May I have the courage to grow in wisdom as well as knowledge. Let me live a life of integrity showing respect for myself and others in everything I do. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.
