Dear Year Five Families,
We've made it to the ending of Term One! The Year Five teachers would like to begin with congratulating all Year Five students on a fantastic start to 2022. Students have shown resilience and have been risk takers this term, practicing for NAPLAN and juggling all different extracurricular/extension classes throughout the term, as well as settling in to their new classrooms. The year five teachers couldn't be more proud.
Reading
Students begin the final two weeks of term one learning about Narratives. Students are unpacking the features and structures of narratives and will be looking at figurative language to enhance their knowledge when reading a variety of fictional texts. Students have been identifying the various sections of a text whether it be the conflict, resolution, main characters, setting, or overall structure. Students are using the Story Mountain template as shown below to plan their work and show their understanding when reading fictional texts.
Writing
Now that the focus has been moved to Narratives, students will be exploring the structure and vocabulary that narratives produce. Students are beginning narratives by following a seven step structure. Students this week have focused on the first three - this ensures that all aspects of a narrative can be covered in students writing. The seven steps include:
Mathematics
During Mathematics, students learnt about the different properties 2D Shapes and 3D Objects hold. Students explored the vertices, edges and faces identifying the 2D shapes that make up 3D objects. Students have also explored a variety of ways to represent data collected as a whole and individually. Students were given a subject and asked to form a question to ask their peers to which they could collect data from. Students represented their data in a variety of ways as shown below. Students were asked to reflect on their learning.
Unit of Inquiry
Through the Transdisciplinary Theme, ‘Who We are’ and central idea, ‘Characteristics of a leader determine their legacy,’ students have begun to investigate a leader of their choice or former Prime Minister of Australia. They are using the key concepts of responsibility, causation and perspective. Some questions that they are inquiring into are what the different responsibilities their leader has, why did the person become a leader and whether or not they believe their leader was effective.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN prep is continuing with students displaying commitment and resilience to ensure they are doing their best. Although NAPLAN dates are not yet final, it will likely be held in May, around the second or third week of Term Two.
Homework
Homework is an expectation for the Year Five cohort and can be accessed via Schoolbox as well as glued in student homework books. It is a way for students to reinforce learning from school and facilitate mastery in specific areas. The homework cycle allows students two weeks to complete the set tasks and we encourage families to have discussions and ask questions of their children. By showing an interest in the activities, the children appreciate that what they are doing is of importance. This cycle of homework is due on April 26th, first day of Term 2. Students will have the School Holidays to continue learning from their given homework. If you have any questions regarding the homework tasks, please do not hesitate to contact your classroom teacher.
Important Dates:
Athletics Carnival - Wednesday, April 6th
Last Day of Term 1 - Friday, April 8th
