Year Three News

Written by The Year Three Team

Dear Year Three Families and Guardians,

What a busy term it has been! The Year Three teachers are incredibly proud of all students for settling in, continuously demonstrating the attributes of the Learner Profile and for their hard work and determination to prepare for this year's NAPLAN.

Students have been working hard in class learning new concepts in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. The Year Three students are continuing to produce high quality work and continually show high levels of engagement.

On Wednesday the 23rd of March we celebrated Harmony Day. It was fantastic to see so many students representing their culture and being able to share part of their culture with their peers. Students completed many different activities including;

  • Harmony day poems
  • Harmony day crafts
  • Circle time where students shared parts of their culture

Reading

In Reading, students have continued to learn about the QAR model (Question Answer Response). Students have learnt to create “author and you” questions using quality mentor texts as well as, kids’ news videos. The Year Three children have asked and answered, “author and you” and “on my own” questions during independent reading time where they have continued to practise this skill.

This week students completed their very first online NAPLAN practise test to familiarise themselves with the format and expectations. Well done to all students on their great efforts!

Writing

In Writing, students have been working through the writing process to produce their own persuasive texts and are continuing to explore modal verbs and connectives. Students have been utilising many persuasive techniques in their writing including;

  • Emotive language
  • Rhetorical question
  • Facts or Statistics
  • Inclusive language
  • Repetition
  • Bribery and Bartering

Students have used these in their writing to persuade the reader of their opinion on the topics, “All children should do chores at home” and “It is cruel to keep animals in cages”.

Students also completed a 45 minute narrative “cold write” based on a picture prompt where they had the opportunity to showcase their creative writing skills.

In Maths, students are continuing to participate in fluid maths groupings to prepare themselves for NAPLAN, as well as using Essential Assessment to help with our Addition unit. The Year Three’s have been learning;

  • Split strategy using their knowledge of Place Value
  • Vertical number sentences using their knowledge of Place Value
  • Solving worded story problems

Students have applied their knowledge of whole number and transferred this knowledge into our addition unit.

Inquiry

Students have continued exploring our unit of Inquiry, ‘Rules and Laws contribute to developing a more productive society’ under our Transdisciplinary Theme, ‘Who We Are’. Students have continued to show the Learner Profile Attribute of an Inquirer by continuing to create and share their wonderings with their peers. Students have carried out various activities including;

  • Distinguishing the difference between a rule and law
  • Creating their own rules and laws for an island
  • Identifying and recognising how rules and laws have changed over time, with a focus on schools
  • Exploring road rules and road laws
  • Identifying the context of rules and laws. Do these apply at home, school, or in our society?
