Year Two News

Written by the Year Two Team

Dear Year Two Families,

It has been a very busy fortnight for the students in Year Two and we can’t wait to tell you all about it!

Reading

In Reading, the students have been improving their comprehension skills, exploring the Conceptual Understanding of, 'How can we show our understanding of what we learnt.'  Students have also been further expanding their knowledge on verbs, nouns and adjectives. Students, through a range of just write books and epic books have been independently reading and writing down any nouns, verbs and adjectives that they found in their story. Each class has also been continuing their guided reading, working closely with the teacher on specific goals to improve their reading abilities.

Writing

In Writing, students have been continuing to create a range of wonderful, descriptive poems. Some of the poems that the students have been learning about were acrostic, somewhere and cinquain. When investigating these poems students discussed the structure of each poem and why following the particular structure is important. The students have been following the writing process along the way to get these poems published.

Maths

Following on from place value and the amazing robot creations, for the last fortnight, students have been looking at different ways they can show their understanding of numbers, creating H charts and exploring number lines in more detail. In addition to this, they've been learning about 2D shapes. Students had the opportunity to create something with 2D shapes and identify the features of the shapes they’ve used.  Throughout athematics this term, they’ve also been working through worded problems and understanding how open-ended questions have more than one answer. When a question is open-ended, this is where students need to think critically and try to solve the answer in more than one way. This way of learning through Mathematics allows students to share their thoughts with their peers and allow ideas of learning to bounce off each other.

Inquiry

In inquiry, students have been continuing their research into a chosen dimension of health which has included finding, recording and organising  facts. Students enjoyed creating a poster to display this information. We were all very proud of our students and the fantastic risk takers and communicators they were when presenting. It was very evident to see an immense level of confidence being built during this term. In addition to researching, students have been looking into how different activities impact their health and wellbeing. They’ve also been inquiring further into the second line of inquiry and learning how they can restore balance to their health including participating in a range of fun and calming activities such as: Arthub, team building fun and mindfulness activities. We’re seeing some incredible artefacts coming through to show our students understanding of their first Unit of Inquiry around how lifestyle choices influences their health. We encourage all students to make a connection by bringing in an artefact next week. This inquiry will finish up at the end of week 11. On Friday next week, the first Unit of Inquiry Rubrics will be published on Schoolbox. These results will reflect the effort students have put in as diligent inquirers this term.
