Farewell to our Semester 1 Exchange Students

At the end of Term 2 we farewelled our two visiting exchange students, Caterina Panzeri from Italy and Aaron Krings from Germany. Both students studied in Year 11 and have now returned to their respective home countries to resume their education. It was a pleasure to have both students with us in Semester 1. Thank you to host families: Carolyn and Ian Dillon, Bryan & YH Williams, Armelle Timbal and family, and the Ellis/Corsie family.

This term we have 3 Exchange students with us. Francesco Bocchio from Italy and Nyla Selten from Germany. Sidney Hagermann, also from Germany, is continuing with us this semester, having completed Semester 1 in Year 10.

Exchange and study abroad students at our school offers great opportunities to not only learn about different countries and cultures, but to also open up opportunities to establish long lasting friendships with students from around the world. I encourage our school community to greet and welcome all international students who choose to be with us at Brighton Secondary College.

Semester 2 Language Centre

A big welcome to the students entering our on-site Language Centre in Semester 2. The Language Centre offers students the opportunity to focus on developing competent English Language skills that will enable them to transition into our mainstream classes successfully. It also allows students to become fully accustomed with our school values and expectations.

A big thank you to Ms Apostolellis, Manager of the ELC and the teachers who support the students as they make their way in our school.

Work Experience Week for International Students

Our Year 10 International students have the choice of completing their Work Experience in their home countries or taking part in a customised program at school. This year we had students complete work experience placements in China and Vietnam, and we had 17 students complete the school program.

The school program required the students to identify their strengths and personal interests, prepare a CV and a work place survey. Mr Lyons arranged ‘Mock Interviews’ for the students with a focus on asking and answering questions most likely to be asked by a potential employer. They visited Monash University for a day to be shown around the campus in Clayton and to meet current International students. They also completed a survey of shop employees at Southland Shopping Centre to learn about work hours, staff duties, uniform requirements and possible employment opportunities.

In all, a very worthwhile and productive week.

Congratulations to the students on your efforts, attitude and behaviour.
