ANZAC Day–

‘Light Up the Dawn’

ANZAC Day - Saturday 25th April

This Saturday we will commemorate ANZAC Day.

This one will be like none that have gone before it as we will not gather in large numbers at dawn to remember our soldiers of the past and present.  Since regular public marches and services are cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis, radio networks are signing on to live stream services people can tune in to outside on phones and tablets.

The RSL has requested that families walk to the ends of their driveways on April 25 and light up the dawn. Families across the nation expected to stand at their gates, on balconies or verandahs at 6am and hold a candle to fallen heroes.

Musicians everywhere are being called on to take to their front yards to play the Last Post and Rouse or Reveille for neighbours. Residents are being urged to dress windows and mailboxes with poppies and kids to make bright red "wreaths" from painted egg cartons or card to hang on doors.

Credit for the idea is being directed at Melbourne man Justin Wilbur, the son of a Vietnam veteran who says, "nothing is going to stop us from remembering" our Diggers.

So families at COHR are invited to either “Light Up the Dawn”, decorate the outside of their home with red poppies (some ideas further down the page) and join in this prayer at some time on Saturday, ANZAC Day.

ANZAC DAY Prayer

The 25th of April, is Anzac Day.

Let us remember it in our own way.

                         On that day in 1915

In a far-off- place called Gallipoli

Anzacs died, so that we might be free.

On Anzac Day, we think of those who died.

                         Will you remember?

                        We will remember.

We honour their youth and courage and pride.

Will you remember?

We will remember.

We remember all families of soldiers who have gone to war.

Be with them in their worry and their grief.

Will you remember?

We will remember.

We remember all animals that served and assisted the soldiers

Will you remember?

We will remember.

We pray for peace in our hearts, in this community and in our family.

We will remember to be peacemakers in our daily lives.

Will you remember?

We will remember.

Let us all join is as we say Our Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy Name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation

But deliver us from evil.

Amen

The Ode

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

We Will Remember Them

Make Milk Carton Anzac Lanterns to place at your driveway.

This is a clever idea found on Facebook and Pinterest.  These lanterns would be perfect for the dawn service at the end of your driveway.

You need:

An empty milk carton                   Scissors

Textas / markers                             Candle - led or tea  light

Dirt / sand

Create An Egg Carton Poppy Wreath OR a Floral Wreath

Floral wreaths are traditionally laid down to remember those who have given their lives for us. Usually, the wreaths laid down on Anzac Day include Laurel (also known as Bay Leaf), Rosemary or Poppies, which symbolise honour and remembrance.

You can make your own wreath using egg cartons and paint. All you’ll need is an egg carton, a paper plate, red and black paint and glue. You can follow all the steps at this blog post. If you don’t have any egg cartons laying around, RSL Queensland has recently published a blog post with instructions on how to create your own DIY wreath using paper and paint.

Alternatively, if you have a Rosemary bush or a Bay Leaf tree in your garden, you could try creating your own rosemary or laurel wreath.

This wreath can be hung on your front door or even on your mailbox. You can also change out the word “remember” for “lest we forget”.

Decorate your letterbox or windows

This time at home provides the perfect excuse to dive into a craft activity with the family. So, why not consider decorating your letterbox or front windows?

You could use handcrafted poppies or paintings stuck in the front window for people passing by to enjoy. You could also consider using chalk to draw pictures of poppies on the front footpath.

People walking past will love seeing the Anzac spirit coming to life in their neighbourhood. Not only is this a great way to keep the family occupied, but it’s also a fantastic opportunity to talk to the kids abo
