SURROUNDING OURSELVES WITH BOOKS
I read an article this week from Education Review (Issue 7, October 2018) titled "Buy the Book". It began with "A bookish adolescent who ended school at Year 9 but grew up in a home with a large library is likely to be just as literate as a university graduate whose home lacked books. That's according to a new study that collected Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies data from just under 163,000 participants across 31 countries, including Australia." This is interesting data, because early exposure to books and continued ongoing exposure to books through home, school and community is extremely valuable.

SCHOOL READING CHALLENGE
This Term I have issued a challenge to the primary students to read outside their usual genre/ comfort zone selection. The suggestion is go to a shelf you have not visited previously either in the fiction / non fiction or picture book area and thoughtfully look at the cover and the title and read the back blurb. It's like trying new food , unless you have a taste you will never know what is out there that you may just enjoy.
So if your child starts coming home with random and unusual titles, support them and chat to them about their choice. Wide reading widens our minds and our perspective.
