Literacy Notes

Book Boxes (Prep - Year 6)

This year as part of the students’ Stationery Pack, we included a plastic Book Box. The Book Box is part of our Daily 5 initiative we have adopted at Beaumaris North. The students will carry this Book Box with them through each year level of school.

Daily 5 is a literacy framework that instills behaviors of independence, creates a classroom of highly engaged readers, writers, and learners, and provides teachers with time and structure to meet diverse student needs. Daily 5 classrooms produce productive, highly engaged students who develop a true love of literacy (The Daily Café website).

The five elements of the Daily 5 are:

  1. Read to self
  2. Read to someone
  3. Listen to reading
  4. Work on writing
  5. Word Work

Most classes have now set up their book boxes with the students. The students were quite excited knowing they had their own Library of books at their fingertips. The book boxes are a wonderful resource. They provide students with the flexibility to sit anywhere in the room and have their books right at hand.

The students choose ‘Good Fit’ books to place in their Book Boxes. A Good Fit book is a book a child can read confidently and fluently. They can use the ‘iPICK method pictured below. The students’ Book Boxes can hold any of the following book. A library book, a take home book, a picture story book, a magazine, a non- fiction book of interest, a Unit of inquiry book, (Years 3- 6) a book from home. Some classes also keep their ‘Writer’s Notebook in their Book Boxes. Sometimes the students may choose a book on a topic of interest that they can’t necessary read every word, so they may choose to read the pictures instead.

The students will ‘shop’ for books on a regular basis in their classroom libraries, the school libraries or a home. Please chat to your child about what books their Book Boxes contain. If your child is in Year 3-6, they might like to bring a book from home. (Don’t forget to write your child’s name in the front cover).

HAPPY READING!
