Grade One

T3 GRADE 1 WEEK 2

General:

Welcome back to Term 3! All Grade 1 students have made a wonderful start to Term 3, settling into the routines of the classroom and displaying increasing independence in initiating learning tasks. Students have shared many of the exciting and joyful adventures they have undertaken during the holiday period and have returned to school very refreshed. It has been great to see the excitement amongst students reuniting with their friends. Our excursion to MoPA was an absolute hit! You could not wipe the smile off of the students' faces as they engaged in all of the fun activities and let their creativity run wild! Thank you to all of our amazing parents who helped make the day run like a well oiled machine.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, we have been exploring the concept of Place Value. Over the next few weeks, students will be given opportunities to engage in open-ended tasks that allow them to explore and build on their current understanding by applying it through Partitioning, Renaming, Addition and Subtraction. Students will be using a range of strategies together with concrete materials that will assist them to bridge the gap between concrete and mental mathematics. Students will have multiple opportunities to practise these skills and extend their knowledge through reasoning and problem solving.

English:

In Writing, we have been learning about information reports. We are building our research skills, learning about the purpose of a classification. We have also looked at a variety of animals to help prompt student writing. Students have explored different non-fiction texts to further strengthen their understanding of the structure of information reports as well as descriptive and technical language. During Reading this term, we will be focusing on non-fiction texts and completing five finger retells. We will also continue to make predictions and students will share their reading responses with their peers.

Integrated Studies & RRRR ( Resilence, Rights, Respectful Relationships ):

We started the term with a celebration of NAIDOC Week. We participated in discussions about the significance of an Acknowledgement of Country and paid respect to the traditional owners of the land we are on. This term, our students will be exploring the concept of Sustainability.  Over the next few weeks we will be reflecting on the responsibility that we all play in protecting our Planet Earth. We will be exploring ways on how to better protect our environment, including reducing, re-using and recycling. In RRRR, we have been learning about how to cope with challenges and remain calm in stressful situations.
