Safe Around Schools

Welcome to Term 3 already!

This month we focus on the importance of wearing a helmet when students are riding or scooting to school.

As a community, we always love seeing children/teens being active by riding, scooting, or skating in our neighbourhood.

Once our Melbourne weather improves this term, more students will choose to ride and scoot to school, however it is really important that they are being safe riders before their trip starts.

It is important your child/teen always wears a helmet while on a bike, scooter, or skateboard to ensure they are not seriously injured.

Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of head injuries by up to 74%.

Helmets must be worn when riding:

  • On roads and road-related areas
  • On bike or shared paths in bike lanes
  • In recreational parks
  • In carparks
  • On footpaths

Below is a simple way to check your child/teen has their helmet fitted correctly before their trip.  (Resource courtesy of Road To Zero).

Police can stop bike and scooter riders and issue warnings or fines for not wearing a helmet.
