WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YEAR 2

Term 3 Weeks 3 & 4

LITERACY:

Reading - When reading, we are focusing on authors’ purpose. We are learning to use the author's words to infer how a character is feeling. We are also looking at explaining the reason something happened in a text.

Writing - We are introducing narratives this term. Weeks 3 and 4 will have us explore using paragraphs to sequence writing and make it easy to follow. Editing is also a focus, in particular using capital letters at the start of sentences and for the name of people and places, as well as using  full stops, exclamation marks, and question marks to signal the end of the sentence.

Spelling - To read, write and spell words with the eer and ed/d grapheme (sound)  is our focus in weeks 3 & 4.

MATH: We are looking at addition and subtraction. We are also exploring chance and the language used around chance as well as identifying the probability of events. Week 4 will also see us look at 2D and 3D shapes.

INQUIRY: This term we are exploring the area of Science. We are looking at growing and cooking things. During weeks 3 and 4 we will be looking at where our food comes from.

WELLBEING: Students identify and describe personal interests,  skills and achievements and reflect on how these might contribute to school or family life.

HOMEWORK: Homework expectations are that students are completing home reading (at least every school night) and filling out their reading diary. Remember each student is aiming to get 200 nights of reading across the year to get a ticket to the Pizza Party! A reminder that your child also has a log in to mathseeds which they can access from home should they wish.

REMINDERS:

  • Year 2 sport Tuesday afternoons.
  • Friday 11th August Grade 2 Day Camp at the Briars.
  • A gentle reminder that we discourage students bringing special toys, games, items etc to school due to the possibility of them getting lost or damaged. It is very upsetting to all when this happens.  We like to remind students that if it is extra special, then it's best to leave it safely at home!

Our Mascots

Our Mascots are heading to your homes again during term 3. Bessy is going home with the children in 2MD and Bob is going home with the children in 2W. They will come home on a Wednesday and are expected to be returned on the following Monday. We have loved seeing what the mascots have been up to with the children so far and have seen some amazing handwriting from the children that they have then read and shared with their classes.

CONTACT: Please feel free to get in contact with your child’s classroom teacher/s via their emails below.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YEAR 5/6

Term 3 Week 3 and 4

READING: We are learning to analyse strategies authors use to influence the reader. We will be focusing on the tone of the story and the words the author uses to convey the tone.

WRITING: In writing we are creating a narrative story for our Prep buddies. We have planned our story and begun writing our introduction, focusing on how to capture the reader's attention using sizzling starts and the ‘show don't tell’ strategy. In the next two weeks we will be drafting the body paragraphs of our story, focusing on using our writers voice and word choice to uplevel our writing.

MATHS: We are learning to solve multi-digit multiplication using the vertical multiplication strategy. This will allow us to solve large multiplication problems with ease. We are also learning to express probability using fractions, decimals and percentages.

INQUIRY: This term we are investigating the role of food preparation in maintaining good health and the importance of food safety and hygiene. This week we are learning to understand the safety guidelines for food preparation and storage and how to prepare food using different kitchen utensils. In the coming weeks we will be using the school kitchen cart to prepare and cook food.

HOMEWORK: Students are expected to complete 5 nights of a minimum 20 minutes of reading each week as well as 3 Mathletics tasks. We ask for these to be completed by Monday of each week. Students will receive reward time if both tasks are completed.
