Dear Parents are Carers,

This Friday Somerville Primary School is taking part in the National Tree Planting Day. Mr Williams our Science teacher is leading this program. All students will have a plant to plant. This will provide opportunities to not only further develop our wonderful grounds, but it will also provide more extensive opportunities for native wildlife to come in and make the school their home. Can I please ask all parents to remind their children that they cannot play in the garden beds or at the front of the school.

It was wonderful to see so many parents come along to Parent Teacher Interviews, sharing in your child’s growth is always a highlight. All students make progress at different rates, it was pleasing to hear from so many families; how impressed they are with their children’s growth, both academic and socially.

Today is 100 Days of School for our Prep students, it’s a very exciting milestone for our students, they are celebrating with a class party and some special craft activities. In relation to staffing, Dana Moore one of our ES Team is moving onto a new school. We wish her all the very best, Dana’s sparkly outfits will be missed by all!

As part of our whole school focus on Writing, I have really enjoyed listening to students share their writing, the planning process and how amazing their ideas are. Heading to look at the chickens with 1B was outstanding, the language they were using and brainstorming was exceptional! I have heard from a number of parents how impressed they were, scanning QR codes in Grade 3 to listen to the stories their children have written. On the 14th of August we have a Curriculum Day focused on Writing. This Professional Learning will provide further scaffolding for our students writing skills and Professional Development for our staff with the teaching of Writing.

On Monday the school received some of our 2023 Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN results. As previously communicated, this year there are new proficiency levels measuring student progress (exceeding, strong, developing & needs additional support). Generally, our students performed very well again with the majority of our students performing in the Strong/Exceeding range. Whilst NAPLAN is not the most important measure of a school’s success, it is important, and these results highlight the consistent and high achieving culture at our school.  It is cause for celebration and something we can all be proud of. Some highlights include performing up to 22% above similar schools, with an average of 15% above similar schools across all areas. Our overall results were extremely high, In particular our Numeracy results in both Grades 3 and 5 were the highest they have ever been. We are extremely proud of all of our students are their results. Showcasing our school motto, all of our students should be Proud to Shine!
