THE HELLO PROJECT

As School Leaders we have been involved in a project called the ‘Global Citizen Student Ambassador Project’ where we have been working with students from other schools to identify an issue in our school community that we would like to change.

We have looked at the Students Attitudes to School survey data and found that 28% of students don’t feel connected to our school.

We want this to change and have decided to start with “The Hello Project”, we think that the simple act of saying hello can make us all feel more connected and included.

To begin with, we are going to ask all the students at assembly to get up and meet 4 new people in 4 minutes so that they can learn something new about each other.

We challenge the whole school community, parents included to say ‘Hello’ to someone new next week!

ENVIRONMENTAL TEAM

Congratulations to 3TW,1AN and 6JH for having 7 pieces of trash. They will receive Ernie the earth, our environmental mascot. This month we are participating in the Plastic Free July program by encouraging students to bring the least amount of trash throughout the week. We will also be installing our first trash security system throughout the school. The environmental representatives will stand by the door to make sure that students don’t bring rubbish outside. We will be doing this for the rest of July. If we are successful we will apply this for the rest of the year.

BOOK WEEK

We are excited to announce our upcoming Book Week event, which will take place from the 21st to the 25th of August. This special week aims to celebrate the joy of reading, the creativity of children's literature, and the power of storytelling. The official Book Week event theme this year is Read, Grow, and Inspire.

One of the highlights of Book Week will be our parade on the 24th of August at 2:40pm. During this parade, students will have the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book or book character. We encourage our community to consider an eco-conscious and sustainable approach, by reusing, recycling, and up-cycling materials and objects.

It is a gentler way to minimise our impact on the environment and showcase our student’s creativity and enthusiasm for reading and storytelling.

In addition to the parade, we have planned various activities throughout the week to engage students and foster a love for literature. Each day, during eating time, students will have the chance to share and read aloud their own books they have written in Writer’s Workshop over the loudspeaker. This initiative not only promotes public speaking and communication skills but also encourages a diverse range of ways that our students can publish their writing and share their books with the wider school community.

Our wonderful art teacher, Tamara, has organised a bookmark competition where students will design a bookmark. One student’s bookmark from each year level will be selected and printed to be given out in the library during Book Week.

We will also be having two authors visit the school who will be sharing their experiences as authors/illustrators. We have the wonderful and creative Marc Martin for our Foundation to Year 2 students, and the incredible storyteller Zeno Sworder for the upper years. If you have their books at home, please feel free to send your children along with them as there may be an opportunity for the authors to sign them at the end of each session.

We also warmly invite parents and carers to come and read to students during Book Week. We believe that hearing stories in different languages and experiencing different storytelling styles will not only broaden their understanding of diverse cultures but also spark their curiosity and imagination. If you speak English or are fluent in a language other than English, we would greatly appreciate your participation in this event. Please let us know if you would like to volunteer and indicate the language(s) you can read in HERE.

The overarching purpose of our Book Week celebration is to honour the importance of expression and communication through the ancient art form of storytelling. Books and the dedicated authors and illustrators behind them have the power to transport us to different worlds, evoke emotions, and ignite a lifelong love for reading.

We kindly request your support in encouraging your child's participation in the Book Week Parade and related activities. We also encourage you to engage in conversations about books and storytelling at home during this special week. By fostering a shared love for reading and the magic of stories, we can collectively nurture a rich literary environment for our children.

We will be sharing more detailed information about our Book Week events closer to the date. We look forward to your active involvement and witnessing the joy and excitement that Book Week brings to our school community.
