Literacy in Year One

Reading

Throughout term three, we have learnt lots of exciting concepts and are consolidating previously learnt concepts. We are beginning to read independently at our tables and have introduced some new chapter comic books into our reading library. In InitiaLit lessons, we are learning new sounds such as 'oi' and 'y' making the 'i' and 'e' sounds. We continue to encourage students to bring their diaries and readers every Friday to help support further learning at home.

Writing

Over the last six weeks, we have worked hard throughout our writing sessions. We have used technology to research an animal that interested us. We then wrote a fact file on that animal using our research. The students were very excited about this activity and enjoyed using technology to research. We then moved onto procedural writing, where we have learnt about the text structure. The students know that procedural writing must have a title, aim, ingredients/materials list and detailed steps. The students created their own procedural writing and some chose to provide steps for edible slime! Over the next few weeks we will continue to consolidate new writing structures and then we will revisit narrative writing.

Speaking and Listening

The students have been working hard at using their listening skills within the classroom. They are learning to contribute their ideas in a respectful manner by using their talk moves to communicate. The students are becoming independent in the tasks that they complete and are seeking assistance when they require it.

SCIENCE WEEK

To celebrate Science week our Foundation, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students were treated to a fantastic science demonstration by one of our wondeful parents, Cath Shepherd.

Thank you so much the students loved everything.

Take Home Readers

Each week, your child will be provided with one hard copy reader to read for the week. We ask that the book is read 2-3 times per week and is logged into your child’s reading diary.

If you would like to read an extra book for the week, your child may login to the MultiLit eLibrary using an electronic device. The eLibrary uses a browser-based platform, so books can be read on desktop computers or mobile devices (including smartphones and tablets). You will find the link to this website and your child’s login details at the front of their reading diary. Alternatively, your child may choose to read a ‘good fit’ book of their choice instead.

Your child’s reading diary and book needs to be brought back to school every Friday morning to be checked and swapped over by your child’s classroom teacher. We kindly ask that all books are taken care of and returned in good condition every Friday.
