ENGLISH OVERVIEW - Term Three

Writing during Term Three has had both a Speaking and Listening focus and Imaginative/Poetry focus. During the first four weeks, students have learnt skills on presenting a point of view to the whole class through researching, forming a speech and delivering it. These skills are building on their ability to hold a mini debate with their peers. Scaffolding the students skills, abilities and self awareness has seen many of our students experience success in their verbal presentations. In the last week of the term, all classes will be holding a number of proper debates where a team will be announced as the winning debate team. By the way, we have many great debaters in each room. Good luck to the parents, when they are trying to twist your arm for something they 'really' want.

During weeks 6, 7, 8 and 9, students will be completing a range of poems (on topics of their choice) which will be collated as a poetry book and assessed for their Semester Two Portfolio. Some of the poem styles which we will be focusing on are: Haikus, Simile, Limerick, Personification, Simple Ballads and Shape poems. As teachers, we love teaching poetry as it allows the kids to be expressive and a safe in a non-threatening environment.

Reading in Term Three has been focused on the Disney classic novel 'Never Never, written by Serena Valentino'. It is a retelling of the Peter Pan story but from the point of view of Captain Hook. We have been enjoying integrating the use of the Six Thinking Hats (De Bono) into building the students comprehension skills. We have had a weekly focus for each chapter, allowing the students to think differently about the content of the novel. These hats focus on different areas of comprehension and allow students to think 'outside the box'.

We are developing some great classroom displays with these colourful hats. If you want to find out more information around the focus of these hats, you can either check out the link below (for some light reading), ask your child or contact your child's teacher.

  Year Six CHESS TOURNAMENT

Congratulations to Anika from 5/6C for winning our Year Six Chess tournament. The Grand Final round saw Anika versing Jade, both who had continued to play brilliant chess for the whole time. Granted it took nearly 6 months to complete (due to student absences) but we got their in the end. Congratulation also goes to Jade for coming second.

Let's CELEBRATE. Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray!

Buddies: Year Five - Foundation

Continuing through the semester, our Year Five students have been running short Buddy sessions on a weekly basis. This week Franklin and Bailey taught the session, which had a focus on patterns and fine motor skills. Well done, the end result looks great!

Year 3-6 Electives

It's been a little quiet over the past few weeks with our 3-6 electives put on hold, but we are happy to announce that they are on again this week. Check out in the next issue for some more photos.
