Physical Education Focus

A Focus on PE & Sport

It has been a busy start to the term in PE and Sport with students involved in division playoff finals, the return of the House Athletics, a sports colours day to announce the opening of the Women’s Football World Cup, Year 5s have began wheelchair basketball and the Learn to Swim program has commenced, but more on these later.

What’s Happening in Physical Education

Firstly, let's focus on PE. This term the Foundation to Year 2 students are being good sports. They are discussing what being a good sport looks and sounds like both when you win and when you lose. Students are playing minor team games and are challenged to display their sportsmanship skills throughout the games.

Year 3 students have been learning the skills of shot put, discus and high jump and will put this learning into action when they are given a chance to be measured in these events and score a point for their House just by having a go.

Year 4 – 6 students also continued to develop their shot put, discus and high jump skills and were given an opportunity to display these skills at the House Athletics Day which took place at Collingwood Harrier Track last Wednesday. This is the first time since 2019 this event has been held and it was a new experience for all the students, one I hope they enjoyed.

House Athletics Carnival

The performances of the students at the House Athletics event were a pleasure to watch, both skills related, and sportsmanship related – there were so many amazing highlights. Well done to all students who pushed themselves and took part in events to score points for their House. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all those people who helped to run an event as well as a thank you to all those families who turned up to support the children.

Wheelchair Basketball Returns

Also returning to Fairfield Primary School for the first time since 2019, is wheelchair basketball. The Year 5s will be experiencing this fantastic sport as part of their alternative sports program. Thank you to Peter from Disability Sport and Recreation for giving our students such a unique opportunity.

Representing FPS at Division Netball

Congratulations to our Year 6 boys/mixed netball team who won the district competition at last term’s winter sports gala day. By winning that competition they earnt the opportunity to compete at the division playoff day earlier this term. The students did an amazing job winning a nail biter in their first playoff game scoring with less than 10 seconds on the clock to go one point up. This put them through to the grand final match where they played extremely well but were sadly beaten. Great job team.

Football Colours Day

Finally, a huge congratulation to Sylvie, our Year 6 Sports Leader, for her vision and planning to organise the football colours day which celebrated the opening of the Women’s World Cup. This was a wonderful day filled with colour and enjoyment. Sylvie as well as a number of other Year 6s gave up their lunch time to run football (soccer) activities for any students who wanted to participate. Well done to all involved as well as those who proudly wore their colours on the day.

Thank you to the Year 6s who helped us celebrate the opening of the Women's World Cup. It was a great day! I was helping out with the penalty shoot outs and there were loads of kids who showed up and gave it a go. Number soccer and dribbling skills also were really successful. We saw lots of variety in the team colours that people chose to wear on the day. Thanks again to the Year 6s that shared their ideas and helped out, and thank you to Geoff for helping me make this day happen.
