Welcome back to Term 3.
It was an honour to be invited to attend a Punjabi Community event held on Sunday at our school, to celebrate Teeyan, an annual event which is dedicated to the onset of the monsoon and is celebrated by daughters and sisters. It is an opportunity for women to come together to sing, dance, be entertained and enjoy each other's company. It was an amazing afternoon and a spectacle of colour and sound. Thank you to one of our parents, Rajinder Joshan (Josh) from Austar events Melbourne for his brilliant organisation.
Last Friday we had our coffee and chat with our parents. It was a great turn out and we had some terrific discussions. I feel so lucky to work in this amazing community. Your willingness to support us as a school and partner with us in so many ways puts us at a great advantage when it comes to making a difference in our children’s lives. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend.
Semester reports were sent home at the end of last term. 77.4% of parents have read the reports which is pleasing. Our teachers work hard to ensure they accurately report on each of their students. Families now have an opportunity to speak with their classroom teacher about their child’s achievements and progress at our Learning Conferences on Wednesday 26th July. A booking link is available on Compass on your child’s student profile page. At this stage, 65% of our families have already booked. It’s a fantastic opportunity to hear and share information to support your child in their learning.
We are very proud to report that our 2023 NAPLAN school results have seen significant growth in our student outcomes. Our committed staff have worked tirelessly over the last 18 months to continually improve their practice and increase student learning growth. It’s fantastic to see that our work is having such a positive impact on our academic outcomes. We will continue to strive for excellence to achieve our vision for our students. NAPLANN assessments were held earlier this year for our Year 3 and 5 students - NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents and schools to see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy, against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. The data from NAPLAN is one of the tools that teachers use to understand your child’s progress and plan for their teaching and learning.
Our staff have recently completed the Community Understanding and Safety Training (CUST) over two evenings. This is professional learning for school staff to increase their understanding of Koorie culture, history, and experiences. It was delivered by our Koorie Engagement Support Officer (KESO) Penny Norris. There were some difficult moments for all of us as we reflected on the trauma that so many indigenous people experienced and continue to face today. As educators this learning and reflection is essential in order for us to support all students and families. Learning about our history is essential as it helps us understand how what happened in the past has made things the way they are today. We learn how not to repeat mistakes of the past and create a better tomorrow for all.
