Welcome Back

Welcome back to Term Four!

We hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing break over the holidays.

Last term was a great success. Our highlights were House Athletics, Maths Planks Workshop, a visit from poet Lorraine Marwood, a Kite incursion and excursion. The students impressed us all with their impeccable behaviour across all events.

We have an exciting term ahead of us, including ... Bike Education and Year 4 End of year celebration.

Kind regards,

Maths in Term 4

During this term, emphasis will be placed on:-

Number: Patterns and Algebra

During this topic, students will explore and describe number patterns using multiplication, addition and subtraction. Students will be exposed to simple algorithms that involve a short sequence of steps.

Measurement: Location, Transformation and Angles

Students will use scales, legends and directions to interpret information on maps. Students will also look at lines of symmetry in patterns, pictures and shapes. Students will also be exposed to the different types of angles.

Statistics and Probability: Data

During this topic, students will select methods for data collections, including survey questions and recording sheets. They will then construct suitable data displays using tables and various graphs before evaluating the data collected.

We will also be placing an emphasis on Word Problems. Students will be exposed a variety of worded problems and the different strategies they can use to solve them including drawing a diagram, drawing a table, acting it out, guessing and checking, creating a list and looking for a pattern.

Students will also participate in activities aimed to develop their understanding and fluency when  working through worded problems.

English in Term 4

Our Term Three Writing sessions  will focus on procedural writing which will be linked to our inquiry topic and poetry. Students will look at the structure of these texts.

We will also be having a larger focus on free choice writing

UNIT OF INQUIRY: MAGNETIC MOVES

This term the children will be exploring the  Science topic  ‘Magnetic Moves’. In this topic students will be  studying mechanical forces such as pushes, pulls and friction, as well as gravity and magnetic moves. We will be investigating how a force can cause an object to start or stop moving and change its speed and/or direction of movement. We will also be investigating how forces can also change the shape of objects.

Homework

Homework will continue to be sent home to complement the learning the students are undertaking within the classroom.

Students will continue to complete ‘Big Writes’ throughout the term. Part of their homework in these weeks is to talk to as many people as they can about the topic. This helps students to process their thoughts, expand their ideas and retain the information compiled for their Big Write!

Bike Education

In Year Four children begin the Bike-Ed program, that will continue into Year Five and Six. The children will be required to bring their bike and helmet to school on  specified dates.  A notice will be sent out to provide you with further information. During Bike-Ed. sessions children will be asked to bring a roadworthy bicycle and a helmet that complies with Australian standards.
