P.A.R.T.Y. – Prevent Alcohol and Risk – Related Trauma in Youth

On the 8th August a group of Year 11 students travelled to The Royal Melbourne Hospital to participate in the P.A.R.T.Y program.

This program is designed to show students first hand some of the tragic consequences that can occur if they participate in risk taking behaviour, as well as the choices they can make to avoid trauma and injury.

Students spoke with the people who care for trauma patients – paramedics, doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and volunteers, as well as having exposure to real life scenarios and a trauma injury survivor.

They learnt about trauma injuries and had   hands- on experience with some of the equipment used in trauma care and rehabilitation.

Touring the intensive care unit and emergency departments provided students with a realistic, and potentially confronting experience. Student reactions were varied however all agreed that is was an invaluable day.

Thank you to Mr Rennick who provided the transport at no cost to students and Lisa Mathieson for supporting our students.

Extension Numeracy

The students of the Extension Maths program were lucky enough to listen to some guest speakers about their school and career journeys.

Andrew Crossman – MFB

Kylie Caldicott – Tax Accountant

Natalie Pizzini – Marketing Manager (Pizzini Wines)

The guests were asked to speak with the students about their experience with numeracy/maths and how it has applied to their job(s) throughout the years.

Each speaker took us through their final years of secondary school, the subjects they like, the subjects they felt were most important (knowing what they know now). Each speaker spoke of the importance of English, as communication is very important in all of their roles, they also spoke of the importance of Maths and the skills learnt in relation to problem solving and understanding the different strategies that can be used to solve a problem (even if it is not numerically based).

Discussions were then centred around their pathway to the careers they are in now.

Each speaker has had a unique journey and the students were very interested in each of the roles that they have fulfilled, including the requirements needed to get there.

An example was given in each of the roles that they have been in about a problem that was faced and the process they used to solve the problem (thank-you to Andrew for his fire illustrations!). Finally, each spoke of the numeracy components that are used within their roles on a day to day basis and the importance of building and maintaining your numeracy skills throughout school to assist with solving these problems.

I know that l was very appreciative of the time given by Andrew, Kylie and Natalie to come and speak with our students and the students were all very positive and thankful for the information that they have learnt and the meringues that they got to eat compliments of Natalie!

I am hoping to have another three guest speakers in Term 4 for the students from different career pathways.  If you or someone you know would be interested in being a guest speaker please don’t hesitate to contact me. The students are very keen to hear more from real people, about the different careers that are out there in the ‘real world’!

Year 10-12 Outdoor & Environmental Studies

Recently our Year 10-12 Outdoor and Environmental Studies students ventured up to Lake Mountain. Student explored the Alpine environment while developing their skills. For many this was their first time doing cross-country skiing.

Students got the opportunity to challenge themselves on Chocolate Frog Hill with the steep curving trail causing several crashes.

One student commented that he was expecting it to be good but that an hour into the trip it was already better than he had hoped for. Next week our Year 11 students return to Lake Mountain for an overnight trip. It’ll be cool!!
