Hands on Learning

Hands on Learning was very excited to welcome its students back for the 2018 school year.  We all came back refreshed and ready to kickstart our year with a bang.  Term 1 is always a busy term, and with it being only a 9-week term, our students have been working hard to cram in as much work as possible.

Everyone was keen to get back to see the progress of our aquaponics and to ensure there was no losses in our goldfish family.  We are happy to report that all our fish survived the holidays and have been enjoying their constant food supply from the aquaponics system.

Hands on Learning were lucky enough to have two visits from Bunnings Warehouse already this term.  Deb and Jenni from Bunnings Warehouse visited and helped our students plant out a herb garden and a succulent’s garden in our Hands on Learning outdoor area.  This was a great opportunity for our students to engage with individuals outside our school community and share their thoughts and ideas when planting out the new gardens.  The workshop was a fantastic team effort and we would like to sincerely thank Deb and Bunnings Warehouse Warrnambool for their continued support of Hands on Learning at the Warrnambool College.

Some of the projects our students have been involved in this term so far include: cleaning out and maintaining the aquaponics system; preparing and potting succulent cuttings; painting canvas art in our new Hands on Learning art space; sanding and staining pre-made shelves from the Technology Department; building a hanging garden from recycled timber and guttering; replacing cushions on the library chairs; and researching, planning and making their own projects.

We would like to take this opportunity to let you all know that we will be holding a Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser on Saturday 17th March.  Our students are very keen to get involved and help at the BBQ.  The funds raised will go towards the purchase of some much needed resources for our program, so please come out, buy a sausage and say hi.

Hands on Learning at Warrnambool College also have some very exciting internal and community projects coming up this year.  So, watch this space for further updates on those, as they will provide our students with some very rewarding experiences.
