Indonesian News

Term 2 has been a busy one for students learning Indonesian! Our Year 8 students have had the opportunity to participate in dance workshops run by Lenggok Geni Indonesian Dance Community. Students learned the ‘Tarian Betawi’ routine a dance of the traditional Betawi people of Jakarta. At the end of the session they also had time to teach our Indonesian volunteers the Nutbush Australian party dance. Talk about sharing culture!

As mentioned in our last newsletter, we had 6 students make it through to the state finals of the Sayembara Lisan Indonesian speaking competition. Another congratulations to Summer Croft and Klay Po (Year 10) and Amelia Wildie, Zoe Lanyon, Niharika Harne and Wendalyn Yu (Year 8). Your hard work and commitment to the competition really paid off! I had the honour of attending the awards ceremony for this event run by the Victorian Indonesian Language Teachers Association at Melbourne University last Friday night where Wendalyn Yu was awarded a Highly Commended award for her participation. To put it all into perspective overall our students competed against 900 students from 45 different schools across Victoria. A massive achievement!

Pictured also in this newsletter are just a few of our students who achieved High Distinction averages in Semester 1. This shows a huge commitment to learning a second language and we hope that you plan to continue with your study of Indonesian at Ringwood SC.

I look forward to sharing with you in our next newsletter, photos and stories from the Year 9’s visit to the Indonesian Consulate General and the restaurant Pondok Rempah which is taking place this week.

Salam,
