Junior School

Semester One

It has been a busy end to Semester One in the Junior School with classes and assessments finalised, integrated units of work and of course, reports. We congratulate our students on a fantastic Semester One, we can’t believe they are halfway through the year already!! Here are some highlights over the past fortnight from the Junior School:

Year 7 Trivia Day

Trivia was held on the last day of term as a celebration to our Year 7s students and part of our ongoing transition program. The students connected with other students from their House group to form trivia teams. They travelled to Manningham Function Centre to enjoy lunch together and compete in the coveted Year 7 House trivia. The students enjoyed their day and got into the House spirit! We congratulate them on a great finale to their first semester.

Year 8 Commerce Unit

The Year 8s commenced for the first time at RSC the integrated Commerce unit. This unit focused on Victorian Curriculum Standards of:

Work and Work Futures

  • Work and wellbeing
  • Influences on work

Government and Democracy

  • Features of government
  • Roles of the Houses of Parliament
  • Democratic freedoms
  • Constitutional change

Laws and Citizens

  • Australia’s legal system
  • How laws are made in Australia
  • Comparing different types of laws

Citizenship and Diversity

  • Australia’s national identity and belonging
  • Religious & cultural differences and values

The Year 8s were highly engaged in the unit over the last two weeks of the semester which culminated in the passing of a Bill through their mock Parliament session in their classes. The kids got right into it and it was a great insight into this area of curriculum. We thank the Commerce team for their hard work and creativity in preparing the unit and also the Year 8 classroom teachers who delivered the program.

Year 8 Subject Selection

Year 8s had their first introduction to Middle School during their assembly on the 19th of June. The topic was Year 9 course selection where students gained an understanding of the subjects available and the process of subject selection. It seems crazy to be talking about Year 9 already for our Year 8 students however, it’s imperative for planning that students work with their families in deciding on electives for 2020 and meet the set deadlines. Students will receive an email in the coming weeks informing them that the 2020 Middle School subject selection handbook is available and in the email there will be a link to the College website. Any information required about Year 9 course selection can be found in the Middle School handbook and any questions about subject selection should be directed to Matt Tucker in the Middle School office. We thank Matt and the Middle School team for beginning their work with our Year 8 students and we look forward to supporting the Year 8s in their transition into Middle School.

News around the Junior School

We congratulate Ella Hose who was Maroondah Leader Newspapers’ “Junior Sports Star”. Ella was interviewed on her sport of athletics and in particular discus and shot put. She highlighted some of her recent success, one of which she is most proud of being participating in the Australian Athletics Championships and coming in first place for discus and second place for shot put and achieving two personal bests!
