ABCN My Career Rules

ABCN My Career Rules

Two of our Year 11 Business Management classes were fortunate enough to participate in ABCN’s digital program called My Career Rules. This involved meeting mentors from Macquarie Bank in an online forum and discussing various aspects of their careers.

Students worked in small groups to generate questions to ask their mentors. Some included:

  • What did you study at university or TAFE?
  • What do you love most about your current role?
  • What strengths, skills and mindsets or attitudes are most important for your job?
  • How do you manage a work/life balance?
  • What advice would you give someone in their early years of high school who wants to find out more about a job like yours?
  • What do you think are the skillsets of the future of work?

The discussions that emerged from these questions were highly engaging and provided valuable insight into how their mentors shaped their own careers.

After the session students were asked what they will remember most from the session. Some responses were:

  • How there are so many different jobs within one company.
  • That you can now work at home and the office.
  • There are always alternative pathways you can take in order to get to your desired career.
  • To always ask questions (even during an interview).
  • That I have time to decide my career.

Overall students gained a better understanding of jobs and career paths that are available when they leave school as well as an increased curiosity to explore these further.

On behalf of the students, I would like to thank ABCN and our mentors from Macquarie Bank for providing this amazing opportunity and Mr Nguyen for supporting the incursion.
