We Need Milk Containers and Stakes!

The biodiversity revegetation area needs one litre milk cartons or two litre plastic milk containers and small stakes to use as plants guards. A collection box/bin will be placed near the office for clean milk containers. If you are able to cut off the bottom and top of plastic containers, that would help us also. If you have any spare stakes (timber or bamboo) lying around, we can use them.

Five-Week Nude Food Competition 27 Oct – 24 Nov 2022

Although Newham Primary School has a great waste sorting system where we recycle and compost as much as possible, our soft plastics bin is filling up quicker than ever. The wrappers are still managing to get into our school yard and can eventually end up in the waterway or in the adjoining horse paddock impacting wildlife and livestock.

Some families at NPS are already making great efforts with nude food lunches which is fantastic. We also acknowledge that families are busy and sometimes snack foods in wrappers are convenient. However, the student sustainability leaders would like to see more families aiming for more nude food, and for students to contribute to the choices about their snacks and lunches. Earlier this year, the sustainability leaders ran classes across the school showing students the sorts of foods that can be used for snacks and lunches that don’t require wrappers. They talked about using bento boxes with compartments and buying food in bulk.

The student sustainability team have decided to run a weekly nude food day competition every Thursday, from this week until 24 November. Each class will receive a score based on the percentage of students who bring a completely nude food snack and lunch. At the end of the five weeks, the class with the highest score will win a prize of a cooked lunch on Friday 9 December. Ms Fullard and the sustainability students will take over the staff room and make and serve a delicious nude food lunch based on the class’s ideas and preferences.

We hope families will support this initiative and move toward reducing the use of packaging in general.
