Clever Classes

Kinder | Prep | Grade 1 | Grade 2 |

Students in Kinder, Grade, 1 and Grade 2 have been doing

some very clever work in class.  Take a look!

Kinder

Every second Thursday, Kinder participate in a mindfulness program run by the Mind, Body and Soul grade 10 students from MacKillop College.

Last week, we went to MacKillop to participate in some musical experiences.

We learnt about body percussion and making sounds using our body and different movements, played xylophones and horns to learn about high and low notes and

sang songs with the teacher about ‘big ear lobes’.

Prep

In our MJR (Making Jesus Real) unit we have been exploring how God makes us all special and unique with different gifts and talents to offer.  We have asked the question - how can we share these to help others?

We have read picture books about being unique and with our 5/6 Huon buddies we are making a big book about being unique on Book Creator. We are also finding out what talents and interests our own buddies have.

Grade 1 Leatherwood

Prompted by the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the genuine curiosity of the class group, we have been exploring the life of the Queen.

We watched video of her Coronation and of the recent Platinum Jubilee events. The children were very interested to see Prince Charles at the Coronation as a small child and discussing how his now King Charles III.

Much discussion was also had about how young the Queen was at her Coronation.

We compiled some fun facts:

  • The Queen became a homeowner at the age of 6 when she was Princess Elizabeth. She was gifted a Wendy House by the people of Wales.
  • Her favourite dog was the Corgi.
  • She loved horses and was a world renown breeder of race horses.
  • She was the longest reigning British Monarch.
  • She owned an elephant, two giant turtles, a jaguar and a pair of sloths.
  • She had two birthdays. One her actual birthday, the other an official birthday. It is said the June official birthday was at a time when the weather is better so the people could celebrate outdoors.
  • The Queen was the only person in the United Kingdom allowed to drive without a licence.
  • She had a sense of humour.

We also enjoyed watching the Paddington Bear production she did for the Platinum Jubilee this year. Apparently, no one knew about it, even her family until it was released. You can watch it on this link  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UfiCa244XE

The class came together to complete a collaborative mural project. We then reflected on what we had learned, what we wonder and what we might ask the Queen if we ever had the opportunity.

Jade: "I wonder if she would give me gold?"

Audrey: "I would ask her how many Castles she has".

Aidan: "I would ask her for a job as a Butler".

Grade 2 Wattle

Grade 2 explored the Book Week theme 'Dreaming with Eyes Open'.

We created some artwork about stories we dreamt up using our imaginations and through brainstorming and sharing our ideas. Stories we told involved interesting settings, faraway places, volcanoes, rainbows, dragons, mermaids, animals and people.

Look at our amazing artwork!
