Wear it Purple Day

Wear it Purple Day is today!

We encouraged students to wear as much purple as they could and to use the colour purple in their online interactions to show support for our LGBTIQ+ community.

Wear it Purple Day is about showing LGBTIQ+ young people that they have the right to be proud of who they are. It is about creating safe spaces in schools, universities, workplaces and public spaces to show LGBTIQ+ young people that they are seen and supported. While we are all at home, we extended this to our online spaces as well.

For students this included:

Wearing purple clothing or accessories during video calls

Using the colour purple in their online interactions (such as purple hearts etc)

Changing the background of their Teams screen to the colour purple or the Minus 18 banner

This year’s theme is ‘Start the Conversation: Keep It Going.’

This messaging is especially important for students during a lockdown as it is a reminder to check-in and to show support for the diverse experiences students might be going through.

We should also remember that the issues we reflect on during Wear It Purple Day should not only be considered on Friday, but every day.
