Food Technology

Food, Textiles & Agriculture

It has been an exciting time for students in the Technology learning area over the last two weeks. From celebrating National Science week theme ‘Food Different by Design’, to welcoming the arrival of ‘Bear’ and ‘Jedd’ our beautiful Friesian/Jersey cross calves for the Year 7 Calves Create Careers program.

Year 7 Food Technology

Students in Year 7 have been developing their knowledge and understanding of different processes and methods of cookery. They produced Chow Mein using the wok and seasonal produce.

This week students made Macaroni Cheese served with a fresh garden salad.

This recipe involved making a ROUX – which is a combination of butter and flour and forms the base of several sauces.

Each week it has been wonderful to see students developing their skills when producing their recipes and taking care to present their dish aesthetically.

Grow Cook Sell

Students in Grow Cook Sell have spent their time between the kitchen and the garden over the last two weeks.

Students have been investigating seasonal produce and trialling suitable recipes to prepare for the school community.

Yesterday students made the most of the perfect planting weather and completed the wicking beds, Students planted carrots, leeks, chives, spring onions, and are raising a variety of seeds.

Foundation, Year 1 and 2 Food Technology

Students in Foundation 1 and 2 have been creating healthy lunch options including Stripy Salad Pots and Pizza.

This week for National Science week, students investigated the role of yeast in making pizza dough.

Students learnt that when yeast is given moisture, food and warmth, yeast will grow and release carbon dioxide.

The carbon dioxide forms bubbles, which are trapped in the dough, making it expand and rise!

Year 7 Agriculture

This week we welcomed ‘Bear’ and ‘Jedd’, two fine-looking Jersey/Friesian cross calves from the Campbell family. The calves are part of the Cows Create Careers program Year 7 students are participating in at Edenhope College. Students are feeding the calves twice a day and will be learning about animal husbandry and the dairy industry. More info about this program on the next page

Edenhope College is very grateful for the opportunity that this program has to offer to students.

Year 5/6 Textiles

Students have been creative designing and producing their very own personalised softie. It has been wonderful to see students use their problem solving skills and working collaboratively when designing and producing their softie.

Year 3/4 Woodwork

Students have been revising safety and tool knowledge over the last two weeks. The tool of the week was the hammer and how to use this safely in the Woodwork room.
