Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week

Astounding Response to Book Week Celebrations!

At 8.30am on Thursday 26 August, Mrs Sernio’s email crashed with the mad influx of photos being sent. Bing! Bing! Bing! There were over 150 emails with photos galore! This set her into a frenzy as she tried to answer calls and deal with the incredible response from the school community. Enthused students were dressed ready for a party, or as their favourite book character. We not only had students in costume, but also siblings, parents and even dogs! Costumes were made, props added and even birthday cakes on show. What made things worse was the sighting of a giant cockroach in Mrs Gaiser’s office!

Junior School students from Prep to Year 6 have been examining, and responding to, the shortlisted texts in each category. This year’s books showcased some exceptional storylines, characters and messages. It’s always great to see the cumulation of our term-long studies, with the all-important announcement of the winners of the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year Awards. Chapel was ably hosted by our very own Year 11 English Captains, Karishma Mevasia (11.15) and Jack Powell (11.15), who added to the festivities as they announced the winners and led us in prayer.

We would like to thank everyone involved behind the scenes and the whole Oxley school community for their overwhelming support. It’s a wonderful time of year to shift our attention and shine the spotlight on our talented Australian authors and illustrators.
