Word of the Week (WoW)

What are WoWs?

WoWs, or Word of the Week are words that will appear every week both in the newsletter and in the display cabinets around the school as a way of helping the students at St John Vianney’s build their vocabulary. What we know about the importance of having a broad vocabulary is:

1.     A broad vocabulary helps children think and learn about the world around them.

2.     Students with strong vocabulary knowledge also have good reading comprehension and the ability to predict things from text.

3.     A child’s vocabulary growth is directly linked to his or her overall school achievement.

What can we do with the Word of the Week?

It is important to talk about the WoW words with your child. Talk about what the word means and use it in a sentence frequently. Incorporate it into your chats after school and model how the word is used in different situations. Research shows that children need multiple exposures to new words and to hear how they are used across different settings and situations. When your child is showing a grasp on the meaning, you can also talk about the synonyms (words that mean the same thing) and the antonyms (opposite meanings). Enjoy studying new words with your kids!
