Reminder: DSC Short Story Competition Closes 27 July

Calling young writers! Have you submitted your entry for the annual DSC Short Story Competition?

Open to all students across the College, it's time to express your creativity, unlock your imagination and get writing! Simply chose from one of the five prompts provided (see Compass newsfeed) and use this as inspiration for your short story.

Creative responses should be between 600-1000 words and can be written in any creative format. This could be a short story, a series of diary entries, a newspaper article etc.

All entries should be typed, printed and submitted with the cover sheet to the student’s English teacher by Monday, 27 July.

The top entry from each English class will be submitted to a judging panel who will determine the best short story in each year level. There will be separate sections of the competitions for submissions written by SEAL and EAL students.

The winners from each year level will be invited to attend a literacy luncheon in Week 7 of Term 3 where they will receive a certificate and their prize. All winning entries will also be published in the school newsletter.

All information relating to the competition, including the five images, terms and conditions and cover sheets can be found in the Compass newsfeed or can be requested from your English teacher.

I wish you all the best of luck and I am truly looking forward to seeing the amazing ideas that you all come up with!

New Child Safety Policies

At DSC we take our obligations as a Child Safe organisation very seriously. To ensure we continue to maintain the highest level of protection for our students, we have developed some new child safety policies.

DSC's new child safety policies include:

These policies are pending endorsement by School Council in August.

Why are Child Safe Standards Important?

To create and maintain a child safe organisation, all Victorian schools must comply with Child Safe Standards which came into effect on 1 August 2016.

Child Safe Standards are important in order to:

  • promote the safety of children
  • prevent child abuse
  • ensure we have effective processes in place to respond to and report all allegations of child abuse.

They also ensure that child safety is embedded into our everyday thinking and practice, and highlight that as a school community, we all have a role to keep children safe from abuse.

More information about Child Safe Standards can be viewed in the below video, "Taking Child Safety Seriously".

If you have any concerns regarding perceived risks to child safety, please contact Glenn Morris on 03 9848 4677 or email glenn.morris@education.vic.gov.au.

Art in Isolation - Exhibition

DSC is running its annual College exhibition from 31 August to 4 September for Year 7 – 10 students and all staff.

Themed "Art in Isolation", we invite students to submit work they created while in lockdown. This could include creative writing, arts and crafts, poetry, music, photography, building projects, STEAM items, gardening or mindful creativity.

The work done remotely was so unique, demonstrating resourcefulness and imagination, and we would love to put students' creativity on display for others to experience and enjoy. We will continue to collect work in semester two, showing the continued impact of isolation during this unique time in our history.

How to submit work

Please submit your work from this semester to your subject teacher or Mrs Fisher in the J Block staffroom before the end of this term. If you are unable to present your creation in real life, please take a photo of it and we can laminate/frame it for the exhibition.

If you have any questions, please contact amanda.fisher@education.vic.gov.au.
