Mathematics

In Mathematics we continue to practise basic number facts and automaticity in recall.

Our main focus will be to use the basic skills to develop the four maths proficiencies of Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning.

  • Understanding refers to students making connections between related concepts and progressively apply the familiar to develop new ideas.
  • Fluency describes students developing skills in choosing appropriate procedures and recalling factual knowledge and concepts readily.
  • Problem-solving is the ability of students to make choices, interpret, model and investigate problem situations and communicate solutions effectively.
  • Reasoning refers to students developing an increasingly sophisticated capacity for thinking and actions, such as hypothesising, analysing, evaluating, explaining, inferring, and generalising.

We will be developing these skills whilst looking at Number and all its relations, fractions, decimals, integers, prime and composites and using them with the four operations. We will explore chance and data and look at mapping via cartesian coordinates.

Mathematics is never complete without real life practical applications so we will have regular Problem Solving sessions where the children can put their knowledge and understanding to the test.
