Term 3: Career News

This term has been off to an exciting start with Wellfest week running in Week 3 of the term and several careers-related activities being included in the program. The company Mindflight7 came into the school to run a virtual reality career exploration program with some of our Year 9 and 10 students. This was a fun, interactive session where students used immersive virtual reality technology to understand and experience a variety of different subject areas and careers that were of interest to them.

Many students also chose to take part in a job interview skills workshop run by a careers consultant from Box Hill TAFE's Skills and Jobs Centre. Most of our Year 9 and 10 students are now at the age where they can start to look for part-time employment and attending a job interview can be daunting and stressful. Learning about what to expect and practising with mock interviews is one of the best ways students can prepare for an interview and hopefully secure a part-time job.

Term 3 is always a busy time with students selecting their subjects for the next year and our Year 12s preparing for their University and TAFE applications. Although there is plenty of support, information and resources available through the college around post-secondary courses and programs it is a good idea for students to connect with the Universities, TAFEs and institutions directly through their Open Days. Below is a list of some of the tertiary education institution's open days with some offering in-person sessions and other being done virtually. For more information on any institutions not listed, information will be available through their website.

Work Experience Feature

Name: Keira Vincent Year Level: 10

What industry did you work in for your work experience placement?

For work experience, I worked in the farming industry.

What were the tasks you completed as part of your work experience placement?

On the farm, no 2 days were the same, but some of the tasks I completed as part of my work experience included; herding and moving sheep into new paddocks, fixing fences and poles of paddocks and making sure each paddock had healthy sheep that didn't require more attention, helping unwell sheep and lambs, learning how to slash a crop, fixing potholes in tracks, moving augers to different silos for orders to be fulfilled, and working with sheep dogs to move, separate, and put a yolk on a ram.

What were your favourite tasks that you were required to do? Why?

My highlight of work experience was probably dealing with the sheep and being able to get so close to them and also see a bit of what sheep and lambs are really like in a real-life situation.

What is something that surprised you about your placement?

I was surprised at the number of different breeds of sheep that exist and how fine the wool can get on the different sheep.

Do you think would enjoy doing further work in this industry?

I think I would enjoy doing further work in this industry.

What is something you took away from your work experience placement?

Something I took away from my work experience placement is how different life can be and how on a farm you can plan your day but most of the time your day will completely change, as well as the fact that working on a farm you aren't doing the same thing for more than a day, no 2 days are the same.
