News from Yr 4/5/6

Volleyball Clinic & Mathematics

The whole school is participating in a volleyball clinic with Maroondah Volleyball for four sessions. These sessions will focus on teaching the students to learn the skills of volleyball including digging, setting, spiking and serving. The students have been having lots of fun learning the skills. Hopefully it has opened the door for some students wanting to play volleyball outside of school and/or for those students in Years 4-6 giving it a go in Interschool Sport.

In Mathematics, the students of Year 4/5/6 have been learning a quick and easy hack to multiplying any two digit number by 11. Simply add the digits of the number together and then put this sum between the original two digits. For example, to quickly find the answer to 11 x 53, start by adding the two digits of the number 53 together to get 5+3=8. Next, put this new number between the original two digits to get 583. That’s the answer!

The students had so much fun and success in learning this strategy that they felt confident enough to show each other how to use the strategy.

Kind regards
