Maths & Writing

In our first week back at school, we played an enjoyable game called Date Maths. The idea behind this game is for the class to work together to create sums and get the answers from 1 to 10. The catch is, they can only use the digits from the date.

The date we played was the 14/07/2022 therefore, the children could only use the digits: 1,4,0,7,2,0,2,2. They must make sums using any of the operations and any number of the digits from the date. They can only use each digit once, but if the digit shows up multiple times in the date, they can use the number multiple times. For example, they can use three lots of ‘2’ since the year is 2022.

The children get points for using different operations and even bonus points for using brackets or squaring and cubing their numbers.

This game is a great way for students to work together and challenge themselves to make harder sums.

So much happens during the holidays, so I like to give the children an opportunity to share all the different things they got up to. Usually we will write a recount about their two week break, but this time I thought I would give them a chance to practise their public speaking skills at the same time. The students wrote down all their favourite things they did during the holidays and then they had sixty seconds to talk about their holiday in front of the class. They were given criteria they had to focus on such as: making eye contact with their audience; speaking loudly and clearly; and speaking for the whole sixty seconds.

The audience had things they had to focus on such as using full body listening, and giving feedback to the speaker when their time was up. Every student did such a great job, I was very impressed.

Kind regards,
