Early Learning Labs (Years 3-6)17 - 21 January 2022

Venue: University of Wollongong (Wollongong campus only)

Applications close: Wednesday 17 November 2021

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Students can be encouraged to apply by their school, classroom teacher, subject specialist teachers from school or out-of-school or by their parents. If a school-based professional is identifying a potential student, please supply them with a Teacher Nomination Letter
  • Parents/Guardians visit our website and read the full list of workshops available by scrolling to the “Workshop Descriptions” section.
  • Students apply for workshops that are within their current year (ie. Year 4 students in 2021 will apply for the Early Learning Labs- Year 3 & 4). In exceptional circumstances, we are willing to review applicants who would like to try a more challenging workshop.
  • Parents/Guardians (or school if parent/guardian is unable to) fill out the online application form.
  • This is an academic and creative arts enrichment program designed for students who are motivated and passionate learners and performing excellently in their area of interest. First-time applicants are required to demonstrate their suitability for the program. One piece of supporting documentation is required (see 'Supporting Documentation' section on website). Please note that the Teacher Nomination Letter can be used as a supporting document.
  • Learning Labs is registered as COVID-Safe and follows the guidelines set out by the NSW Government here.

CREATIVE KIDS PROVIDER

Learning Labs can now accept Creative Kids vouchers. Workshops that apply for Creative Kids vouchers are identified on our website in the workshop descriptions.

Please know that applications are now open, and workshops fill very quickly.

We will also have several sponsorship places available for students who identify as Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander or students experiencing financial difficulty.

Home Reading

Home reading has recommenced this term for Kindergarten to Year 6.

Thank you to all students and parents who have again established positive routines to ensure home reading is being completed from Monday to Thursday, recorded each night, and logs/diaries are returned to school on a Friday so teachers can monitor the reading and text selection if selecting from Bug Club (K-3) or Sora (Year 4-6).

Did you know that researchers discovered that reading for 20 minutes a day means a student will read about 1.8 million words a year? This highlights the importance of daily reading, so your support is greatly appreciated and will benefit your child.

We have recently completed a stocktake and have ordered some new resources to update our existing home reading texts.

We look forward to getting those covered and available for students in the near future.

Peace Poster Competition 'We are all Connected'

Earlier this year Years 5 and 6 participated in the Lions Club Annual Peace Poster Competition. Congratulations to Leila VA for being judged the winner and Caitlin A for receiving a Highly Commended award.

Formation of Classes for 2022

All requests regarding a child’s placement for 2022 classes should be made in writing and addressed to the Principal, Mrs Charadia, by Friday 12 November (Week 6). Parents are asked not to make verbal requests of teachers as Mrs Charadia may not be aware of them.

The formation of classes is a complex process and while parental requests are considered, there is never a guarantee that they will be granted. If you plan to make a request, particularly about your child being placed within a friendship group, please be aware that there may be circumstances surrounding such requests that prevent them from being granted.

Questionnaire for a possible bus service north of St Joseph's

We are presently investigating the possibility of a dedicated School Bus, servicing north of the school.

To assist with our investigations we ask families who reside north of the school to complete this short survey.

All responses are to be completed by Friday 5 November 2021.

2022 School Student Travel

Applications for student travel in 2022 are now open. From October 2021, information on the School Student Transport Scheme and the School Portal will be available via Transport for NSW.

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2022 can apply now. Parents/students will need to submit a new application if they are applying for a school travel pass for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation.

Students who change address, school, campus location, or who have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications and current entitlements are updated and remain valid. School Opal cardholders will have the changes applied to their existing card.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition that is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will also receive a notification to re-apply.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2022.

Students living in rural and regional areas should receive their travel pass at the start of the new school year from their nominated transport operator.
