TOURNAMENT OF MINDS

State Finalists

Kew High competes in the Tournament of the Minds (TOM) each year. A team of seven students is selected and given a six week challenge to answer. This year the selected team worked tirelessly on the challenge before and after school. The team then presented their answer to the challenge in under 10 minutes as a performance to judges at Deakin University. For the performance, teams were required to make their own props from recycled materials and write their own script.  They were not allowed any outside assistance.

On August 30 Kew High’s TOM team competed in the regional finals. Kew High was very impressive and had the judges laughing along during their entertaining performance. They competed against 22 other teams on the day and won! This qualified them for the state finals.

At the state finals the team was given just three hours to answer a challenge. Students went into lock down as per the tournament rules. They could not talk to anyone other than their team members. During this time students had to formulate a solution to the challenge, write a script, create a performance and build props. Students then presented their performance to judges, parents and students from schools all over the state. The team pulled together a remarkable performance in such a short space of time and it was captivating from start to finish.

A huge congratulations to Finnegan Comte-Harvey, Joshua Ruiz, Lorne Whytcross, Cleo Funnell, Aaron Korczak-Krzeczowski, Riki Fujihara and Daniel Li the TOM team who made it to the state finals.
