SHADE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

A Great Addition

On Monday 14 August Kew High celebrated the official opening of the Cancer Council eftpos SunSmart sunshades.  These sunshades have been funded through eftpos and the Cancer Council Shade for Secondary Schools grant program.  Kew High School is extremely proud to be one of 11 secondary schools in Victoria selected for this grant program.  The opening ceremony gave the school the opportunity to thank the Cancer Council and eftpos for their generous grant that has allowed Kew High School to create three new shade spaces.

The three spaces are the Library garden, the outside canteen seating area and the portable shade marquee which is used at sporting events and beside the soccer pitch.  Tara O’Brien, SRC Captain and Olivia McDonald, School Captain, ran the ceremony which was attended by the year 7 students and their connect teachers, Jane Hill from the Cancer Council and members of the QNetwork, School Council and Chaplaincy Committee.  Tara spoke about how the Student Representative Council want to do all that they can to protect the students and help to reduce their lifetime risk of developing skin cancer. Providing a shade-friendly outdoor environment will help us achieve this goal.

The new shade areas are a great addition to the School SunSmart policy and along with the new wide brimmed hats introduced this year we are proud to be making positive steps in the fight against skin cancer.  This group of year 7 students are the first group to wear the new hat and to have full access to the fantastic shaded library space.  As part of the ceremony Mrs Entwisle cut the ribbon to officially open all three sunshades.
