Francophone United Nation Simulation

On Friday 24 July, year 12 French students took part in a French immersion program, Simulation francophone des Nations unies (French Model United Nations conference), which addressed the topic of Refugees: Rights and Risks. This is the second such event, held at Melbourne University, offered by the United Nations Association of Australia.

26 francophone countries were represented by teams of four students from a mix of non- government and government schools. We were lucky to have two teams representing Benin and Belgium respectively. Students were allocated a francophone country and had to play the role of delegates at the conference. As representatives of the country they had to present their country’s position on the issue and during the caucus negotiate terms and amendments to the articles of a proposed resolution.

The day was the culmination of a lot of work and our students acquitted themselves exceedingly well. Our teams were very well prepared, they produced well-expressed position statements and presented and argued their points of view convincingly, in French.

They were clearly enthused and stated that they had gained a lot from the experience – learning about the functioning of the UN and the international issue concerning refugees.

French Poetry Competition

This year we again took part in the Alliance Francaise French Poetry competition, which is strongly supported by our students. Students memorise a French poem and recite it in front of an examiner.

Of the 131 Kew High students of year 7 to 10 who took part, there were 38 Finalists (those who obtained a perfect score of 20/20), and 44 Excellent (who obtained 19/19.5/20)

It is worth noting that in Victoria:

- of 3163 year 7 students who took part there were 231 finalists – 18 of those were Kew High students

- of 2743 year 8 students who took part there were 163 finalists – 10 of those were Kew High students

On Sunday 2 August the following Year 7 and 8 students participated in the final round at the Alliance Française office in St Kilda. Well done!

In year 11 Thomas Rayner and Olivia Delezal are finalists in the oral competition.

In year 12 Tara Nosko-Malberg and Lucas Scott are finalists in the oral competition.

The oral takes the form of conversation and presentation and discussion of a set topic.

Lucas Scott is also a finalist in the written exam competition.
