Dear Year Five families,
The Year Five students are going from strength to strength as we race towards the end of 2021. Recently students had a blast innovating texts in Book Week, recording our class Christmas Carols, and moving through our ‘How We Express Ourselves’ unit.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students are continuing to explore our Transdisciplinary Theme, ‘How We Express Ourselves’ and our central idea, ‘The Arts reflect and challenge society.’ To present their understanding of challenges in society, students have been researching a social or environmental issue of their choice. With their research, students will now reflect on their chosen issue, consider its impact on society and create an art piece using an art medium that they are passionate about to express their thoughts and opinions on the topic. We look forward to watching students think critically and creatively as they produce their art pieces.
Literacy
In Literacy, students have consolidated taken their knowledge of poetry and poetic devices to write and publish their own poems that reflect the issue they have selected for their Inquiry assessment. Students have risen to the challenge and written various styles of poems including free verse, limericks and haikus. They have worked to embed a range of poetic devices such as alliteration, imagery and onomatopoeia to engage their audience and have used stanzas and line breaks to organise their writing.
Here is an example of a poem written by 5A student, Harri Leon.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, we have been focusing on the correlation between art and maths concepts which also links to our Inquiry focus. They have been making artistic pieces using parabolic curves ad have used their measurement skills to create symmetrical designs using equilateral triangles, spheres and the x and y axis of the cartesian plane. Students have embraced this challenge by adding creative features to their artworks that make their pieces unique.
Book Week
Week Six saw us finally celebrate Book Week. Despite the rain getting in the way of our school parade, we adapted and had an impromptu WebEx parade with all Year Five classes so students had the opportunity to show off their costumes and favourite book characters. The students worked incredibly hard creating their text innovations and arts pieces for our published class texts and we can’t wait for these to be shared with families.
Christmas Carols
The students have been busy practising their singing and dancing for our annual Christmas Carols. During weeks seven and eight, the Year Five students had the honour of working with the brilliant Mr LaPina to record the vocals for their class song. As teachers, we have been amazed by the amount of students that have been risk takers by stepping out of their comfort zones to sing in front of all their classmates.
With three weeks left of the 2021 school year, we cannot wait to see the students shine when sharing their Semester Two achievements in their three-way conferences next week.
