Year Two News

Written by the Year Two Team

WOW Year Two! What a busy few weeks we have had. We have had our exciting Book Week, Book Day dress up, Superhero Day fundraiser, whilst also practising our Christmas Carols and Three-Way Conference presentations.

Reading

In Reading, the students have been very busy conducting their author study on Anh Do. They have learnt all about his life and, as a class, we have read The Little Refugee, WeirDo 1 and are now reading WeirDo 17 as our class novel to compare and contrast the first and last book of the WeirDo series.

Last week we celebrated Book Day! Despite the rain getting in the way of our parade, we still had a very successful day and were able to show off our costumes and create book reviews about our favourite stories.

Writing

This week, the students have been busy writing two text innovations! The first text innovation was based on their class text during Book Week. The next one was based on the text, 'Weirdo 17' by Anh Do. The purpose of text innovations is to have the students envision themselves as the author and think about what they would change about the text - for example, the characters, the setting, the problem etc.

As the students create their text innovations, they work through the Writing Process of planning their work, drafting, revising and editing, conferencing with the teacher and then publishing and illustrating their work. They are very excited to see their very own text innovation come to life, as soon, it will be made into class books for all to enjoy.

Mathematics

In Mathematics this fortnight, we have continued to explore multiplication and division. Students have begun to make connections between the two and how they can share items into equal groups. We have also researched into different currencies from around the world. Students proudly shared coins and notes from different cultures around the globe.

Inquiry

We have embedded Inquiry into our Literacy and Numeracy lessons. The students have utilised their Inquiry research into their chosen celebrations or commemorations and have applied it into other areas. For example, exploring different currencies of their chosen countries to including their Inquiry research into their text innovations in Writing.

Christmas Carols

In Music and Dance classes, the students have been busy practising singing and dancing to their Christmas carols. The students have had ownership in creating their class' dance routine with the guidance of their teacher and Mr H. During music class, Mr Lapina has been helping the students with their harmonies and singing. The students are very excited to perform their Christmas carols later in the term!
