Safer Internet Day

Levels 1 and 2

Level 1 and 2 explored two scenarios for Cyber Safety Day.  Students worked in small groups to brainstorm, discuss and record their ideas. We discovered many possible solutions.

Scenario 1: What if you had no internet and you wanted to facetime a friend? What could you do?

  • Write a letter to your friend and put it in their letter box
  • Go for a walk together
  • Meet at the park
  • Draw a picture for your friend

Scenario 2: What if you had had no internet and you wanted to play an online game? What could you do?

  • Build with your Lego          - Go outside
  • Draw a picture                     - Get crafty and make something
  • Ride your bike                     - Walk to the park
  • Walk your dog                     - Jump on your trampoline

Levels 3 and 4

The Level 3 and 4 students actively discussed sharing safe and unsafe information online. We spent time enjoying many activities that help us understand this important concept. We read a great book called, ‘Swoosh, Glide and Rule Number 5.’ This included an original song, ‘My Family Rules’, created by Australian children's entertainer Lah-Lah. It was a great way to reinforce the four key online safety messages for young children: Be safeBe kind, Ask for help and Make good choices.

We also reinforced these important messages by completing an online lesson called ‘Now you know me’ from the Cyber Safety Project. This explained ways that we can protect ourselves online by identifying our own personal information.

Level 5

During Cyber Safety Week the Year 5 students completed their iPad quiz, discussing the ways that we can safely and appropriately use our iPad at school. They also completed a valuable introductory lesson into the Cyber Safety program that taught and encouraged students to demonstrate empathy through positive communication strategies such as ‘Text Chat for Good’.

Level 6

The level 6 students came together to think about the positive and negative impacts about being in an online space (eg. messenger apps, gaming online and photo sharing apps). After brainstorming ways to 'play it safe online' we created a shared Grade 6 agreement of online etiquette. The agreements we created as a level were:

In Grade 6 we…

  • are AUTHENTIC - Who we are online is still who we are in real life. Do and say as you would in person. Display your authentic self online.
  • are SAFE- Talk to people who you know and trust. Don’t share personal information. Tell a parent or trusted adult if you need help.
  • are RESPECTFUL – of other people’s choices and the way they choose to use their device.
  • are UPSTANDERS - Help someone if they want or need help. Step in if something is wrong or doesn’t feel right.
  • THINK – Is it true, honest, inspiring, necessary, kind?

This agreement will be displayed in each classroom and be referred to in our fortnightly cyber safety session.
