Redevelopment of The Wildlife Corridor – Phase 2

During Term 4 students have been busy working on Stage Two of the redevelopment of the Wildlife Corridor, by completing the pond formation, landscaping, and planting around the pond. The redevelopment work was made possible by a grant the school received earlier in the year.

Aitken College was one of 111 schools and youth organisations to receive a 2021 Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grant. Victorian Landcare Program is funding these grants to provide young Victorians in schools an opportunity to participate in outdoor, hands-on, on-ground projects, and environmental learning activities that provide both environmental and educational outcomes, as well as health and social benefits.

Plastic bottle tops and bread tags Summer Competition

Plastic bottle tops and bread tags are generally destined for kerbside recycling bins. But what may come as a surprise to many is that these plastic items are simply too small for most industrial recycling facilities, which means they cannot be processed and end up in landfill after all.

The school has a new initiative where you can bring your plastic bottle tops and bread tags to school and we will recycle them for you. The school is collecting bread tags to support the organisation, ‘Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs’. The tags are recycled locally (Robe SA), raising funds to buy wheelchairs for disadvantaged people. The Technology department led by Ian Watson are looking into turning plastic bottle top lids destined for landfill into new products.

Collection points for lids and tags are:

  • Cumberland Village
  • Mr Patchell’s office – D19
  • Mr Ganci’s office – B31
  • Staffroom Verandah

As an incentive for students to get collecting, the school is running a competition over the summer holidays to see who can collect the most lids and tags. There will prizes for each school:

  • Brookhill - $50 Gift card
  • Dunhelen- $50 Gift card
  • Cumberland- $50 Gift card
  • Fairview- $50 Gift card

It would be great for the whole school community to support this great initiative by collecting bread tags and plastic bottle tops. For more information, please speak to Mr. Ganci or Mr. Patchell
