Year 8 Graphic Novels Term 3

At the end of term 3 the topic that year 8 Literacy completed was Graphic Novels. During the topic, we learnt the techniques, formats, and storylines of graphic novels, as well as, how to create one. Our final task was to create our own graphic novel with the famous storyline of “The Tortoise and The Hare.” I liked that we were given a lot of ways to be creative and make our own spin on the story. However, it was challenge to deviate from the original story and think of a way for the tortoise to win which wasn’t just walking.

Note: This page shows the foreshadowing of how the tortoise is planning to win the race. He wants it to rain so that he can slide/swim through the mud and water to beat the hare.

Year 7’s at both the Acacia and Banksia campus began their five week program about Body Confidence last week. Kyling Dorsett, Fiona Fernandes & Carolyn Geer

(Mental Health Practitioners) have created this program based upon building the students self-confidence. The Well being team delivered lesson 1 last week in which the students discussed appearance ideals. Students explored and challenged the concept of these appearance ideals. Where do they come from? What pressure does it put on us? How have they changed? These self-esteem workshops address key topics, including the impact of society, professional and social media on appearance ideals, and give you strategies to boost confidence within students.

Year 7’s are thrilled to be back onsite!

Back to school once again. Hopefully this time we’ll get to stay onsite all the way to the end of the year.

It’s been an interesting return with some people back and some still away. Most are thrilled to be back with their friends and teachers. It’s been great to get a chance to move again and get off our devices. Everyone seems happier and are finding it much easier to engage with the work onsite. It’s so much easier to communicate with our friends and teachers now. We’ve all enjoyed the activities that we couldn’t do at home such as exercising together during PE, doing science experiments and working with cool art materials.

It’s been a journey but I’m glad we’re back together onsite.

Student wellbeing groups for 2022

We are calling out to any students who may be interested in participating in a wellbeing support group in 2022:

CHAMP is a six week skill building group program (1 period per week) designed for year 9 and 10 students to help you explore the topic of anger and to better understand and manage emotions more effectively.

Empower Me is a six week skill building group program (1 period per week) for female identifying students in year 8 and 9 designed to help increase students’ self-awareness, self-esteem, make peer connections and increase knowledge around self-care and risk taking.

BMindful is a six week skill building group program (1 period per week)  designed for year 7-12 students impacted by mental health concerns to help them develop self-care and effective coping strategies.

The impact of COVID, remote learning and changes to our daily routines may have been challenging for our students. Understanding and being aware of our feelings/emotions and developing strategies and communication skills to express this in a healthy manner is important.

If you are interested in attending any of our groups or are wanting  more information, please feel free to contact Kyling Dorsett MHP at Acacia campus (dorsett.kyling@keysboroughsc.vic.edu.au) or Fiona Fernandes MHP at Banksia campus (fernandes.fiona@keysboroughsc.vic.edu.au).
